SACRED DEITIES OF ANCIENT EGYPT — A Pantheon of Paradoxes

Published and distributed by Fine Arts Press, the book I have written, Sacred Deities of Ancient Egypt, is richly illustrated with my intimate photographs of the gods and goddesses. Today, we live in a contemporary cultural vortex—one in which we crave clear, decisive answers to complex questions about the nature of gender and identity. My exploration of themes such as “Ferocity and the Feminine,” “Divine Masculine in the Pantheon,” and “Eros and the Sacred” is an invitation to celebrate the complexity, paradoxes, and dualities these questions raise. In my quest to untangle and describe the complexity of the divine masculine and feminine in the pantheon, I found myself drawn to examine this complexity in my own inner world.

As a Fulbright Scholar, a solo traveler, an older woman, a cultural anomaly, I had the opportunity to explore Egypt’s grand temples. With reverence and an uncanny feeling of being an uninvited guest, I descended the narrow passageways of sacrosanct ancient tombs never intended to be breached once they were sealed. With each subsequent trip to Egypt, I fell more deeply under the spell of the sacred presence of another era. I am grateful to have had this profound experience and the opportunity to document it in words and images.

BIRTH OF THE SUN — A Jungian Perspective

SOLIYA CONNECT

The presentations I made to university students in Egypt while I was a Fulbright Scholar led to my two-year participation as a faculty member in Soliya Connect, an international web-based program designed to provide a forum to increase understanding among university students in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. After retirement from the Department of Art at San Jose State University, I returned to participate in Soliya Connect as a member of the faculty of San Jose State’s Global Studies Department. While the primary focus of my Fulbright grant was a creative photographic project, I felt privileged to have this opportunity to make a concrete contribution to the cultural spirit that lies at the heart of the Fulbright program.
